English as an Additional Language (EAL)

Click here for our approach to teaching children with English as an additional language (EAL).

Queensway School is an inclusive community, enriched by the diversity of ethnicity, culture and language of its pupils.  Children whose home (or first) language is not English, are given support to ensure that they can fully participate in the curriculum and achieve their potential.  The school is committed to offering effective provision for our pupils who have English as an Addtional Language (EAL) or who are bilingual.  We will identify individual pupil's needs, recognise the skills that our pupils with EAL contribute and ensure equality of access for all to learning and the life of the school.

We recognise that learners with EAL have a dual task at school: to learn English (language) and to learn through English using the curriculum as the context.  High quality teaching is the starting point, but this may need to be supplemented with specific strategies and resources to make the language of the curriculum accessible to learners with EAL.

The following link gives more information about our values, aspirations and provision for children with EAL.
